Matilda Way - NSW, Qld

Stretching more than 1700 kilometres from Cunnamulla in the south to Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Matilda Way is custom-made for travellers keen for a taste of the Outback, its unique heritage, legendary hospitality and friendliness.

The Matilda passes through an ever changing landscape, from undulating Mulga plains in the south to open Mitchell grass plains and desert uplands in the central west and gulf plains in the north. There are picturesque billabongs and vast inland river systems, rugged gorges and escarpments and many scenic national parks.

Highlights on the route

Stretching from Barringun on the New South Wales border to Normanton in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Matilda Way stops at some of outback Queensland's most impressive attractions. On your journey to North Queensland make time to see these:

Charleville Cosmos Centre, Charleville: An observatory with four telescopes, plus a multi-media Indigenous Theatre in the most spectacular big sky destination.

Qantas Founders' Outback Museum, Longreach: traces the history of our national airline and its very important links to the outback and its towns.

The Jolly Swagman, Winton

Dinosaur Trackways, near Winton: set in a spectacular outback location, Lark Quarry is believed to be the only preserved evidence in the world of a dinosaur stampede.

The Way can be completed in as little of 24 hours, but that's one heck of a drive and you'll be missing out on the 'real outback'... that is; the people, the attractions and natural sites. Four days is a comfortable drive, depending on how long you stay in each town.
